i-con2 Travel Route : Southern Namibia, Kalahari & Oranje
This travel route through southern Namibia (BROWN and YELLOW on the map) includes a detour to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park in South Africa, the highlight on this route. The second sidetrip leads from Ai-Ais to the Orange River in the south and from there along the river through the dramatically beautiful landscape to Rosh Pinah further to Aus, where it continnues on the B4 to Luederitz. Highlights of this extended southern route are spectacular desert landscapes, especially at the Fish River Canyon and the Dune Namib. The total travel distance is about 4000 kilometres and minimum time required is 15 days, but 18 days or more are a comfortable span.

Vehicle: 4x4 recommendable.
Malaria: No malaria prophylaxis necessary.


Windhoek
Sightseeing (Independence Avenue, Christus Church, Tintenpalast, Old Fort, State House, Supreme Court, shopping malls). Vicinity: Daan Viljoen Game Reserve.

Mariental (approx. 270 km)
On the B1 to the southbound. Heroes' Acre Monument. Stop at the Oanob Dam (accommodation available) near Rehoboth. Further to the Hardap Dam near Mariental (accommodation available).

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Nat. Park (approx. 420 km)
Drive on the C20 to Stampriet and from there on the C15 via Gochas to the Mata Mata restcamp in the park. Border crossing formalities to be done at the main camp Twee Rivieren. One has to prove a booking for at least two nights in the National Park.

Keetmanshoop (approx. 340 km)
Cross the border back to Namibia at Rietfontein / Aroab. On the C16 to Keetmanshoop (museum at the old Mission Church). Visit the Quivertree forest on the farm Gariganus near Keetmanshoop or the Garas Quivertree Campsite. Overnight stay in town.

Fish River Canyon (approx. 170 km)
Drive on the C12 via Seeheim to the canyon. Overnight best at the canyon (Canyon Roadhouse or Lodge) or in nearby Ai-Ais thermal spa (closed from November to March).

Noordoewer (approx. 140)
Drive from Ai-Ais to Noordoewer at the Orange River. Overnight in a lodge in the village or in the vicinity. Or proceed.

Aus (approx. 440 km)
Drive from Noordoewer along the Orange River to Rosh Pinah. From there on a tarred road to Aus. Watch the wild horses near Garub. Overnight stay in Aus possible.

Luederitz (approx. 130 km)
On the B4 to the coast. Tour of the town (Felsenkirche, museum, Waterfront and harbour, Shark Island, Agate beach, lagoon, Sturmvogelbucht. Kolmanskop diamond ghost town). Stay for two nights.

Duwisib / Maltahoehe (approx. 340 km)
Via Aus and on the C13 to Helmeringhausen (restaurant, accommodation available). Excursion to the Tiras Mountains possible. Visit Duwisib Castle. Sleeping over in Maltahoehe or on a farm or in a lodge nearby.

Sossusvlei (approx. 200 km)
Across the Tsaris Pass to Sesriem and to the Dune Namib and the Sossusvlei (walk the last 4km or hire a 4x4). Accommodation in Sesriem or in a lodge in the Solitaire area. Sidetrip into the Naukluft Mountains, accommodation available. If you love the serenity, book another night in this area.

Windhoek (approx. 370 km)
Return to Windhoek on the C26.

Extension to the Coast:

Swakopmund (approx. 350 km from Sossusvlei)
From Solitaire on the C14 through the Kuiseb Canyon. Walvis Bay lagoon. Spectacular coastal road to Swakopmund. Overnight in Swakopmund (also possible in Walvis Bay). Tour of the town (historical buildings, museum, aquarium, lighthouse, casino, shopping, beach). Swakop valley and Moon Landscape. Welwitschia Drive. Two nights in Swakopmund recommended.  

Windhoek (ca 430 km)
Detour to Henties Bay and the seal colony of Cape Cross (perhaps overnight for a third night). Return to Windhoek on the tarred B2 via Karibib. Take a detour to the Spitzkoppe and to Omaruru.
