i-con2 Travel Route : Kaokoland & North-West
The north-western travel route (RED on the map) leads through Kaokoland and Ovamboland. The highlight is the remote Kaokoveld with the semi-nomadic Himba people. For this route at least 4 days are required, better would be 6 days and more. The entire length lies between 1000 and 1500 kilometres, depending on the choice of route.

Vehicle: 4x4 necessary.
Malaria: Prophylaxis recommended.

Opuwo (approx. 420 km)
From Khorixas on the C39 and C43 through Damaraland via Palmwag, Warmquelle and Sesfontein to Opuwo. The distance can be driven in one day. Spend the night either in Opuwo, Palmwag or Sesfontein.

Epupa Falls (approx. 210 km)
From Opuwo a tour to the Epupa Waterfalls at the Kunene river is recommended, for which a 4x4 is required.

Marienfluss Valley (approx. 270 km)
The route from Opuwo via Otjitanda and the infamous Van-Zyl's Pass to the valley of the Marienfluss and Kunene is very tough and needs an expedition vehicle with offroad tyres and good ground clearance. To manage the 12 kilometre long pass can take 4 to 5 hours, Much more viable, though also requiring a 4x4, is the stretch from Sesfontein to the west, via Purros and Orupembe to the Marienfluss valley. More information on our Kaokoveld page in the destinations section.
